THE BIOGRAPHY
Antonio Tarantino was born in Salento Italy. Salento was unique in that it was dubbed the Jamaica of Italy. Summers in Salento were marked with aspects of the Jamaican culture including sound systems and Reggae music.
This “black music" loving musician grew up in a little town in South East Italy, Monteroni Di Lecce in Salento Puglia. Tarantino recalls his first musical experience there when, at the age of three, he received his first keyboard from his father. From the tender age of 5 he held high aspirations of joining a music conservatory, a dream that didn’t become possible until age 19. While studying the Keyboard, from the age of 10, he focused on Italian mainstream music such as Modugno, Claudio Villa, and Mina. At the age of 12 he played in a local church band just so he could stay closer to his dream of one day becoming a musician, as growing up in a little town didn’t offer Tarantino much musical experience.
Three years on he joined Tito Schipa, a conservatorium of music in his hometown where he played the trumpet. Not long after he decided to put an end to this, extending his interest into playing and studying classical piano. During this time he drew significant influence from the likes of Bach, Chopin, Albeniz, Debussy, Post Romantic, and Jazz music. This step led to him to play in ceremonies and in various places such as piano bars, regularly accompanied by his father -- a good singer. Tarantino is uncertain where his love for black music developed, but it did and it has always been a great interest of his. He cites an early interest in Miles Davis which unknowingly led him to Jazz music.
Though a skilled keyboard player, Tarantino was more interested in developing his piano playing technique as he believed this was important in establishing his musical skills. In support of this, his parents rented a piano and after hard practice (8-10 hours a day) he completed his piano diploma in 6 years, instead of the expected 10 .
After evolving his piano skills and techniques, he moved to Holland to study jazz and more piano at Prince Clause Conservatorium in Groningen. Concurrently he worked with the music association “Fa la cosa giusta” in Monteroni. In this time he begun learning English, which notably in itself was a taboo for southern Italians.
After returning to Salento, he was approached by a friend Sandro P, then president of Fa la cosa giusta, to visit Jamaica for vacation. In Jamaica he was introduced to Alborosie which he marked as a turning point in his musical career. He was invited to join Alborosie’s band to play the trumpet. The trumpet wasn’t really his forte and he later added the keyboard, alternating between the two. Despite the language barrier, his love for music prevailed and he has been an active member of the band ever since. In 2009 he performed in his first European Tour with Alborosie and the Shengen Clan and has been touring worldwide with them since then.
