Ha fatto parte tra gli altri del gruppo Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, attualmente è il leader dei Hugo Race and the True Spirit e dei Fatalists e fa parte dei Dirtmusic. Ha vissuto in Sicilia, ora è tornato a Melbourne, sua città natale.
Australiano di nascita, ha dapprima accompagnato i Birthday Party e poi è entrato a far parte dei Bad Seeds. Lasciato il gruppo nel 1984 ha fondato in Australia The Wreckery con Robin Casinader, Nick Barker, Edward Clayton-Jones e Charles Todd e poi scioltisi nel 1988 ha costituito i True Spirits (Bryan Colechin, Chris Hughes, Ralf Droge, Rainer Lingk, John Molineux) con base in Europa con i quali ha pubblicato diversi album, il loro suono spazia tra il blues, la psichedelia, definito dal Melody Maker industrial-trance-blues. Ha continuato la collaborazione con Nick Cave partecipando al disco Kicking Against The Pricks,Tender Prey e Murder Ballads. Ha inoltre partecipato come musicista e compositore a dischi di Mick Harvey, La Crus, Nikki Sudden, Robert Forster, Micevice. Ha fondato negli anni 90 una propria etichetta, la Helixed. Tra gli altri dischi ha prodotto Closet meraviglia di Cesare Basile e Camere da riordinare dei Lo.mo (Desvelos 2005)
Ha fondato assieme a Chris Brokaw e Chris Eckman il gruppo di rock blues etnico Dirtmusic con i quali ha pubblicato 4 album. Dal 2010 ha dato vita, insieme ad Antonio Gramentieri e Diego Sapignoli della band strumentale Sacri Cuori, al progetto Hugo Race Fatalists, con cui ha prodotto due lavori, l'omonimo Fatalists nel 2010 e We Never Had Control nel 2012.
Hugo Race, formerly of The Wreckery and the Bad Seeds and now an internationally based producer, performer and writer, delivers intense sonic soundscapes that merge folk, experimentalism, electronica and rock. Originally from the 1980's Melbourne post-punk music scene, Hugo’s eclectic collaborations and bands are spread over several continents. Hugo’s new book 'Road Series' describes his musical journey over three decades.
Projects:
The True Spirit - since 1989, 14 albums of ‘trance industrial blues’; the new album ’The Spirit’ on Glitterhouse Records is the band’s most successful release to date. The Spirit was followed by the 10” EP ‘False Idols”, also on Glitterhouse, in November 2015.
Hugo Race Fatalists, a collaboration with Italian soundscape band Sacri Cuori, have a new album ’24 Hours to Nowhere’ scheduled for release on Glitterhouse in 2016
Hugo recently finished producing the soundtrack for the George Gittoes film ‘Snow Monkey’, currently on the world festival circuit
Dirtmusic, with American songwriter and producer Chris Eckman (The Walkabouts). Their fourth album Lion City, recorded in Mali in 2012, released on Glitterbeat Records (Germany), March 26, 2014.
Sepiatone with Italian singer songwriter Marta Collica, their third album Echoes On released by Interbang Records (Italy) in November 2013.
Long Distance Operators (LDO), a collaboration with Belgian artist Catherine Graindorge, premiered at the Botanique, Brussels, May 16th 2014. An album is in the pipeline…
