We are pleased to present in the gallery the solo exhibition "Monotypes and Glass" by Tristano di Robilant. On the occasion of his third exhibition in Naples, the artist will present five glass sculptures and eight monotypes on paper.
The sculptures, created in collaboration with master glassmaker Andrea Zilio at the Anfora furnace in Murano, are the result of the partnership between the artist and the master glassmaker, which has been ongoing since 2005. His works, thanks to the transparency of glass, skillfully balance forms, light, and color, referring to archaisms, even though they are strongly contemporary. Forms devoid of irregularities, enhanced by the colors and transparency of the material, take their name from a vast archive of literary, philosophical, and historical influences. Accompanying the glass pieces, a series of monotypes made in Verona in collaboration with the Belardinelli art print shop will be exhibited. The monotypes, which in some cases seem like studies of the sculptures and in others evoke imaginary landscapes, are created with oil colors on paper. The image is initially painted and worked on a plexiglass plate. Then the plate is passed through the press and pressed on a sheet of paper. The works are not an edition, they are unique works, hence the name: monotypes. In these works too, one can feel the suggestion of the transparency and fluidity of glass.
Short Bio
Tristano di Robilant (born in London in 1964) graduated from the University of California at Santa Cruz, where he paid particular attention to the lessons of architecture critic and historian Reyner Banham.
He approached glass for the first time in 1997 with an exhibition at Lance Fung's gallery in New York featuring a group of glass sculptures titled 'Domestic Temples', now part of the Sol Lewitt collection in Hartford, Connecticut.
Emotional landscapes, echoes of imaginary architectures that appear and dissolve in light, are themes he continues to explore in his twenty-year collaboration in Murano with the Anfora furnace and master Andrea Zilio.
His solo exhibitions include the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego in 2016, the exhibition at the Museo di Palazzo Mocenigo in Venice in 2017, and in 2022 with Jose' Angelino the exhibition at the Museo Archeologico Santa Scolastica in Bari. His works are found in the collections of the Museum of Glass in Murano, the Maxxi museum in Rome, and the Buffalo AKG Museum in the United States.
