Inspired by an experiment by Jean Cocteau, 'A Human Voice' debuts at the Teatro Serra in Naples, an investigation into identity in the technological age that serializes our most intimate essence: the voice. By and with Francesca Fedeli, first winner of the ‘Serra-Campi Flegrei’ Prize. Assistant dramaturge Gian Marco Ferone. From April 4th to 6th (Friday at 9:00 PM, Saturday at 7:00 PM, Sunday at 6:00 PM) in Fuorigrotta, at Via Diocleziano 316. Info: teatroserra@gmail.com, 347.8051793.

The voice is what makes us human. It is the meeting point with animality, both private and shared, a symbol of Creation with which we have developed a very close relationship. In just a few seconds, we can record and listen to ourselves, but how does this reproducibility influence the 'perception of self'? In the 1930s, the versatile French writer and playwright Jean Cocteau set up an experimental show titled 'The Human Voice' in which a single actress on stage used the new and avant-garde tool of the telephone to transform a monologue into a dialogue.

'I thought of turning the sense of the work upside down, through a journey into vocality. In the era of individual voices that speak alone, convinced they are having a dialogue, what words do we no longer pronounce? And which sounds will traverse history, even when many supports relieve us from using words? Has our voice always remained the same or has it changed over time?' the author wonders.

Are there 'vocal activities' that have always characterized us? Music itself, an imitation and amplification of the sounds we emit, has changed since we can modify and distort it. Are we definitively abandoning the 'naturalness' that has always been part of the 'discourse on man,' or are we opening up to a new idea of humanity?
