What would happen if, in a post-apocalyptic future, our planet was completely submerged by plastic waste? And if the only way to repopulate and save it were the last two "men" left?
“The show stems from the need to tell our time: an era marked by consumption and excessive exploitation, which are destroying the environment," says the author. "We imagined a humanity regressed to an animalistic level, devoted to mere survival, enriching theatrical language with multimedia elements".
The protagonists are two cousins – Gennaro and Antonio – respectively a shepherd and a farmer, from an unspecified region in the south of the world, with coarse language and animalistic behaviors. Following the promise of a new world that appeared to them in a dream, they decide to embark on the search for a new world, spending several days in the hold of a ship, waiting for the prophecy to be fulfilled. Indeed, something happens: Lilith, the first woman, in love with the human race, descends to Earth and offers them a weapon and a sapling to plant once they reach the Promised Land but, in exchange for the longed-for "piano de cuoppo" and a new life, they find themselves involved in a reality show titled “Seven Eden” which pits them against each other, ready to kill. Will they manage to save themselves? Is there someone, unbeknownst to them, pulling the strings of this tragic adventure?
The story is framed on two symbolic levels with as many physical settings: an epic one characterized by an environmental catastrophe permeated by prophecies, divine beings, and fantastic journeys set in a squalid hold, and a human one, represented by two “heroes” – almost two disheveled masks of the commedia dell'arte – ridiculous, clumsy, and blatantly unprepared to face their own journey, destined to embody contemporary Cain and Abel characters that the female deity Lilith will symbolically transform from animals into humans.
The coveted "upper level" is an augmented reality of blinding lights, deafening music, and lots of greenery, constantly monitored by cameras. Abandoned to their own devices, monitored, manipulated, and put to the test, the two cousins will be slaves to their choices. "Terra" is the tale of a journey into the unknown, but the judging gaze that compels humanity to seek a better life also forces it, as if in an infernal loop, to always make the same mistakes.
"It is a very contemporary tale, which at the same time allows for a real journey into our most ancient history," emphasizes the director.
