Victor Hugo meets the Bari dialect with the stories “Strada Angiola” by Giuseppe Lorusso

"The Last Day of a Condemned Man" by Victor Hugo is a novel written by the author in 1829, a very important novel from a literary standpoint. It narrates, in the first person, the last days of a prisoner doomed to the gallows. A very moving text that brings to the stage the agonies of a man tortured by the mere thought of waiting for six weeks for death. The character describes the situation he finds himself in, with a meticulous description of the real images that, in his mind, open up all his memories of his now past life (childhood, youth, and adulthood).

The idea of “Abbasce la cape” was born from Maurizio Sarubbi's desire, the author, director, and performer, to personally shape Hugo's character by intertwining childhood and youth memories experienced in the streets of our Puglia. The work of merging the two texts is enormous: Hugo's novel is the guiding thread of the work, and the insertions of “Strada Angiola,” justified within the text, bring the audience closer to a more “Simple” and “Real” situation. The importance of memories, the importance of simple things, the importance of certain aspects that seem normal and taken for granted but, when missing, create a great void. The insertion of Giuseppe Lorusso's text “Strada Angiola” makes the entire monologue lighter and at times amusing.
