Victor Hugo meets the Bari dialect with the stories “Strada Angiola” by Giuseppe Lorusso.

"The Last Day of a Condemned Man" by Victor Hugo is a novel written by the author in 1829, a very significant work from a literary perspective. It narrates, in the first person, the final days of a prisoner destined for the gallows. This moving text brings to the stage the agonies of a man tortured by the mere thought of awaiting his death for six weeks. The character describes his situation with a meticulous depiction of real images that open up all his "now" past life memories (childhood, youth, and adulthood) in his mind.

The idea of “Abbasce la cape” stems from Maurizio Sarubbi's desire—being the author, director, and performer—to personally craft Hugo's character by intertwining childhood and youth memories experienced on the streets of our Puglia. The fusion work of the two texts is extensive: Hugo's novel serves as the guiding thread of the work, and the inclusions from “Strada Angiola,” justified within the text, bring the audience closer to a more “Simple” and “Real” situation. The importance of memories, the significance of simple things, and the value of aspects that seem normal and expected but create a great void when absent. The inclusion of “Strada Angiola” by Giuseppe Lorusso makes the entire monologue lighter and occasionally entertaining.
