From poetry to fabric: my narration of the history of buttons and stitches
The exhibition, hosted at SottoSopra Art Studio, is organized on this occasion in collaboration with Hamid Zare.
Curated by Mitra Bostani
Since childhood, literature and art have been inseparable parts of Mitra Bostani's life. Daughter of a poetry and mysticism enthusiast, often immersed in the verses of Hafez and other great Persian poets, and a mother who was a stylist and seamstress, Bostani grew up in a universe where words intertwined with threads, and poetry breathed alongside the patterns and textures of fabrics.
Her artistic journey has evolved from the world of painting to fashion design, embracing interdisciplinary projects that unite visual art, textiles, and literature.
For Bostani, art has always been a bridge, a meeting place between cultures, languages, and disciplines.
The project “The History of Buttons and Stitches”
After moving to Germany, Mitra Bostani created an online workshop to bring together Iranian artists scattered across the world. From this experience emerged “The History of Buttons and Stitches,” a year-long project inspired by the poetry of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and his collection West-Eastern Divan — a work influenced by the verses of Hafez, the great Persian poet.
In this poetic and cultural dialogue between East and West, fashion designers, textile artists, and jewelry creators collaborated to create unique coats, each telling a story, weaving together identity, memory, and art.
Each piece is the result of the work of three artists: a designer, a textile artist, and a button maker, whose exploration spans sculptural and goldsmith sensitivities.
The entire project was coordinated remotely, through virtual meetings and creative exchanges, demonstrating how art can overcome geographical and cultural boundaries to generate new forms of shared beauty.
Collaborations and acknowledgments
“Poetry to Wear” represents the third interdisciplinary project by Mitra Bostani in Germany, realized in collaboration with the Weser Art Gallery and with the valuable support of its director, Helmuth Gaber, whose contribution has been fundamental for the visibility and growth of the project.
