An unmissable live performance between electronic experimentation, ambient noise, and industrial black techno on Saturday, September 21st at RCCB Init:
Yuko Araki returns to Rome with her new album "Zenjitsutan".
The multi-instrumentalist and composer based in
Tokyo explores a wide range of musical activities. Her new album, released by Room40 on August 30, focuses on a noisy and harsh sound inspired by the Japanese noise music scene.
Initially drawn to the piano as a child, Yuko Araki became fascinated by hardcore and metal music during her teenage years. However, her musical palette has expanded significantly as she immersed herself in various projects: she is the drummer of the band Kuunatic, which sets tribal and dreamy tales to music.
It is in her solo project that the creativity of the Japanese artist blossoms: through modular synthesis, Araki creates abstract rhythms and dissonant harmonies, blending noise drone elements and industrial genres perfectly in her compositions.
Her exceptional sensitivity in processing heavy and dense sounds results in a sonic landscape unlike anything ever heard before: as if a thousand leaves were swaying simultaneously, rooted in Japanese noise but completely distinct. Her music transports listeners to intergalactic soundscapes.
In 2019, Yuko Araki released the EP "I" with the Indonesian label Gerpfast Records, followed by "II" with the Italian label Commando Vanessa.
Her debut album, "End Of Trilogy," was released in 2021. "IV," released in 2023 by Room40, is based on creating noise music without unnecessary frills and includes a track featuring the vocals of Taichi Nagura from the Japanese band Endon.
Furthermore, Araki curated a remix EP titled "IV X VI (Re:visions)," which boasts collaborations with a wide range of artists such as Jonathan Snipes of the American hip hop group clipping., the extreme dark metal band Portal, Lawrence English, Nick Klein, as well as Japanese producers Scotch Rolex and Golpe Mortal.
The artist has performed in Europe, the UK, and Asia, as well as making appearances at prestigious festivals such as Ska?u Mežs in Latvia and Jogja Noise Bombing in Indonesia. She has collaborated with visual artist Daisy Dickinson for an audiovisual performance during a European tour in the fall of 2021, and Jackson Kaki, with whom she debuted in China in the summer of 2024.
"As soon as “Zejitsutan” begins, Yuko Araki unleashes a relentless sonic assault. Distorted waves come fast and furious, sandblasting any textural abstractions into a howling oblivion. Serrated edges cut through with harsh static as though interdimensional connections are being torn apart from the inside. The black-and-white video by Daisy Dickinson mimics the charred noise with glitching patterns and hypnotic imagery. Every aspect comes together to overwhelm our senses."
