Penelope

From September 19, 2024 to January 12, 2025, the Archaeological Park of the Colosseum will host an extraordinary exhibition dedicated to Penelope, the mythological figure made famous by Homer's Odyssey. Curated by Alessandra Sarchi and Claudio Franzoni, and organized by Electa, the exhibition will take place in the evocative spaces of the Temple of Romulus and the Farnese Aviaries.

The exhibition, which includes over fifty works including paintings, sculptures, reliefs, and books, explores the myth of Penelope through time, examining her representation both literary and visually. Penelope is an emblematic heroine, known for her cunning, patience, and fidelity, immortalized in iconography with the loom, symbol of her skill and intelligence.

The exhibition path is divided into four main themes: the loom and the cloth, the gesture and the posture, the world of dreams, and the veil of modesty. An homage to the Sardinian artist Maria Lai is also included, whose textile works evoke the figure of Penelope and her connection with weaving as an expression of resistance and creativity.

In addition to the exhibition, the program "Existing as a woman", curated by Electa, offers a series of meetings at the Curia Iulia on the theme of the female condition in history and art. A unique opportunity to reflect on the role of Penelope as a symbol of strength and female independence, capable of crossing the centuries while maintaining her relevance.
