Just a play
Art & photography
JUST A PLAY is the project room by Monica Giovinazzi, curated by Barbara Pavan, which opens on Friday, February 7, 2025 (at 7 PM) at BLU Spazio delle Arti, via Tor Pignattara 142, in Rome. It is the result of recent years' research, during which the artist has tackled and explored the underestimation of manipulative mechanisms and systems that permeate our hyper-technological and globalized era, whose breadth and depth seem to escape us.
Today, the manipulation of individuals is even more pervasive the less it is perceived. In the era of hyperconnection and technology, it finds increasingly sophisticated, insidious, and therefore dangerous forms to consolidate within the lives of individuals, communities, and global society by exploiting the virtual and real networks through which data and information pass and arrive comprehensively, along with their distortion, planning, and instrumentalization. This potentially transforms each of us into a passive subject, incapable of opposing this intricate—and gilded—system of conditioning.
Particularly abhorrent is the manipulation that affects childhood: young people lack the tools to defend themselves and are catapulted into a world that artificially generates and constructs their desires, only to exploit their hopes and expectations. Subjected to a constant bombardment of illusory images, a mystifying overlap of virtual and real, and the glorification of false myths that extend from dominion to consumption, their spaces of freedom are progressively shrinking, suffocated by a system that finds complicity in the figures and institutions traditionally deputed to protect them, safeguard them, and ensure their healthy and conscious development, respectful of each individual's individuality and authenticity.
The project room is composed of three large site-specific installations that transform the space into an immersive and destabilizing environment, where the familiar mixes with the disturbing, and visitors cannot remain detached or passive: everyone is called to confront the ambiguities and contradictions of a system that impacts the most vulnerable, making everyone complicit in a cruel, ruleless game.
The exhibition will be open until March 2, 2025, from Monday to Friday (5-8 PM), with Saturday and Sunday visits by appointment.
