Galleria Six is pleased to announce the solo exhibition of Hicham Benohoud. The artist, born in 1968 in Marrakech, lives and works between Morocco and France. For his second exhibition at Galleria Six, Benohoud presents a new series of works created specifically. Hicham Benohoud’s work is eminently sociological and political: it questions the image of one's own body or that of others through photography and/or painting but also explores the plastic and visual possibilities of the materiality of photography and painting. Swallowed by the pictorial matter, the artist’s eyes appear in these works like those of a woman subjected to the veil by the constraint of religious conservatism accustomed to rigorism. Within these confined spaces, like small windows doubly and concentrically framed by straight and curved lines, the visibility of the body is only partially perceivable. The passport photos undergo a series of manipulations: folding, unfolding, tearing, cutting, perforating, engraving, coloring, and so on. These manipulations reveal, among valleys and reliefs, graphic networks that alter their visibility. The result is an expression of the self at work in its relationship with the other, a continuous struggle between constant conditioning and a strong desire for emancipation.
