Francesco Biondo takes part in “Sensitive Territories”, the itinerant exhibition organized by MoonArt Gallery and curated by Luigi Lai and Nancy Biraschi, presenting three works that engage with the exhibition's theme through an interpretation of territory that goes beyond the simple representation of landscape.
The exhibition brings together 62 artists from across Italy and introduces contemporary art into two small towns in the Marche hinterland, Montegiorgio and Muccia, in the provinces of Fermo and Macerata. The initiative aims to draw attention to places outside the main tourist and cultural circuits, highlighting their landscape, historical and cultural heritage through encounters with contemporary art.
From this perspective, Sensitive Territories forms part of a broader reflection on the role of culture in small urban centres, where art can contribute to creating new forms of connection, revitalizing places and strengthening the relationship between communities and their surroundings. This perspective resonates with wider experiences of urban and cultural regeneration, in which the value of a place can also be renewed through participation and cultural activity.
Biondo's participation fits naturally within this context. In his work, territory is not understood as a subject to be depicted, but as a place of memory, where time leaves traces and where matter preserves, transforms and returns fragments of experience.
In Montegiorgio and subsequently in Muccia, the artist presents the diptych “Sentire Riso, Sentire Pece” and the work “Ciò che resta”, in which pictorial matter acquires a particular density and becomes a space for reflection on presence and absence, transformation and permanence.
In the diptych Sentire Riso, Sentire Pece, colour constructs two strongly characterized organic forms. Reds, oranges, greens and blues meet across surfaces marked by gestures, abrasions and layers, while dark forms emerge within them, resembling cavities or deep nuclei, incorporating small fragments of rice. The contrast between the vitality of the colours and the presence of pitch introduces an ambiguous dimension: nourishment and matter, life and wound, germination and resistance coexist within the same image.
The title itself suggests a relationship between apparently distant elements. Rice and pitch evoke two contrasting conditions: one associated with life and nourishment, the other with a dark, dense substance capable of adhering and leaving a mark. Their juxtaposition becomes a reflection on the transformation of matter and on the persistence of experiences that matter can preserve.
In “Ciò che resta”, the language becomes more sparse. Across a surface dominated by earth tones, ochres, browns and whites, forms emerge that resemble fragments, stones or objects recovered from the material itself. White acquires a particular strength: rather than erasing what came before, it seems to bring it to the surface, like a trace resisting time. The work suggests an almost archaeological dimension, in which landscape becomes a repository of memory.
The three works share an attention to what remains after transformation. Fragment, layering, matter and trace become tools for speaking about time and memory, giving territory a dimension that extends beyond its visible appearance.
This is also where Biondo's participation enters into dialogue with Sensitive Territories: the Marche hinterland is not merely the physical setting of the exhibition, but an opportunity to reflect on what makes a territory recognizable, alive and capable of generating new relationships.
Art can therefore help redirect attention towards places often perceived as peripheral, temporarily transforming them into centres of cultural production and encounter. The exhibition is thus more than a decentralized art event: it becomes an experience in which the presence of artists contributes to a broader process of discovering and valuing small towns and their cultural potential.
