From Picasso to Warhol
The Ceramics of the Great Masters
February 15 - June 2, 2025
Curated by Giovanni Iovane, Vincenzo Sanfo, and Silvana Pellerino
On February 14, 2025, the grand opening of the exhibition “FORM AND COLOR - From Picasso to Warhol - The Ceramics of the Great Masters,” took place at the Oratorio San Filippo Neri exhibition space, Galleria Sottana, located at via Maria Vittoria 5, Turin.
The exhibition brings together works by some of the most important figures in the international art scene who have explored the use of ceramics, terracotta, and porcelain.
The works will highlight both the genuine creation of original forms and sculptures and the decoration of pre-existing objects such as plates, trays, pitchers, and vases, which in effect become the canvas or support for unleashing the artists’ imagination.
A journey through materials and techniques, from ceramics to porcelain, up to the use of terracotta with works by, among others, Julio Le Parc, Yayoi Kusama, Sonia Delaunay, George Baselitz, Gigi Chessa, Louise Bourgeois, Salvador Dalí, and Andy Warhol with the delightful panels made for Rosenthal, reaching up to Jean Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, and culminating with the irreverence of Maurizio Cattelan.
Over 70 artists and more than 110 works will help us understand different worlds and cultures, from Europe to the United States, from Latin American countries to Eastern experiences including Japan and China.
Among these, the renowned Ai Weiwei is present with the sunflower seeds displayed at the Tate Modern in London. Alongside him are some of the most important figures in the contemporary Chinese art world, such as Pan Lusheng, Ma Yuan, Zhang Hongmei, or Xu De Qi who, as children of the new direction, find inspiration in a rapidly expanding country’s officialdom.
Organized by AICS Torino in co-production with Art Book Web and in collaboration with the Congregation of the Oratory of Turin.
The exhibition is open to the public from February 15 and will be available for viewing until June 2, 2025.
