Da chiostro a chiostro

Every Tuesday and weekend in summer , guided tour of the historic center and the S. Paolo district (6.30 pm). From the former Convent of S. Antonio da Padova to the former Carmelite Convent, passing through Piazza Salandra, and other symbolic places of the city. Optional visit to the Museum of Prehistory.

The meeting place is Piazza della Repubblica, dominated by the nineteenth-century Palazzo Colosso, partly built where the Porta S. Paolo once stood.

From the convent complex of S. Antonio da Padova to the Cloister of the Carmelites, passing through the ancient Piazza delle Legne, today Piazza Salandra, this tour, which outlines the S. Paolo district, is a journey that, from the late Middle Ages reaches up to the latest.

A network of streets in what was the lively commercial and craft district and the heart of the local Jewish community of which you will discover habits and customs and the troubled events that saw them as protagonists in Salento. As evidence of this, the mausoleum of the Acquaviva Dukes of Aragon, which can be visited on this tour, seals the desire to erase every trace of the Jews right there on the site of a pre-existing synagogue. Continuing, the effigy of the bishop and goldsmith S. Eligio reminds us of the ancient cult of the saint and, shortly afterwards, of the refined art of ceramics that was decorated here.

The ticket includes the option to visit the Museum of Prehistory which can be done at 6pm before the start of the tour. The museum is located in the welcoming rooms of the Convent of S. Antonio and allows, going back in time, to learn about the rich stratification that distinguishes this territory.
