Staged for the first time in 1988, with Nino Manfredi in the role of the protagonist, this text is still considered one of the most striking to have appeared on the Italian theatrical scene in recent decades. The protagonists of the play are Anna - stage name "Principessa" - a disorderly and noisy prostitute who dreams of becoming a "merry-go-round operator," and Ugo, the tenant on the floor below, an intellectual who scrapes by writing for TV and cinema but dreams of making art films. The story begins on the night Ugo goes upstairs to complain to his roommate, who, returning late at night and turning on the record player, woke him up and, in the confusion, left the bathtub faucet open, flooding his apartment irreparably. Ugo is then forced, also due to an eviction, to seek refuge with the "Principessa." This forced cohabitation sets the stage for a confrontation/struggle filled with incidents and misunderstandings, but also a curious alliance, where each shares with the other what they have. Their respective positions gradually soften as it becomes clear that they have not only come together as two opposing lives, but especially as two seemingly unattainable dreams. From the encounter between Anna and Ugo springs a whirlwind of disasters, misunderstandings, hilarity, and melancholy, fully in tune with the image that their author, Nino Manfredi, has left in the memories of each of us.
