In a small town in the Tavoliere of Puglia, like every morning, an elderly farm worker ties a black handkerchief around her head, closes the door behind her, greeting a picture of Giuseppe Di Vittorio, and walks along the village avenue, clutching a bouquet of fresh flowers in her hands: she is going to the cemetery.

One morning, the woman notices that in a corner of the disturbed land, a cross had been planted with the word: unknown. A foreign boy had been buried, probably a seasonal farm worker with a battered body. The memories of the humiliations suffered in the fields resurface in the elderly farm worker, and in a gesture of compassion, amidst the incredulity of her fellow villagers, she decides to give a "Christian" burial to that boy, a victim of the new system of exploitation, turning the grave of an unknown person into a shrine dedicated to the fallen in the war in the fields.
