VISIONI D'AFRICA, il cinema africano nelle sale di Taranto, Lecce e Foggia

The "Visioni d’Africa" showcase is designed to guide viewers in the search for their roots through African cinematography, in a journey of possible interaction and understanding of the peoples of the Mediterranean Sea: a metaphorical journey into other worlds, adopting a curious and non-judgmental perspective.

The showcase stars at the Savoia cinema in Taranto on Monday, October 28th, continuing on October 29th at the Massimo cinema in Lecce and ending on October 31st at Laltrocinema Cicolella in Foggia.

Screenings start at 8:00 PM; free entry subject to seat availability.

Cinema halls become privileged meeting places for the stories of distant countries and peoples, giving voice to cultural and social realities that often struggle to "speak" and "be heard": on October 28th at the Savoia cinema, through the screening of a short and a feature film, the theme of intergenerational relationships and the search for identity is addressed in the film ‘Wallay’ by the Swedish-born director Berni Goldblum. It depicts the initiation journey of Ady, who was raised in a French suburb and sent by his father to relatives in Burkina Faso, leading him to understand that diversity is a wealth, allowing him to grow and stop feeling like a stranger wherever he is, and the autobiographical short film ‘Sur La Tombe De Mon Père’ by Moroccan director Jawahine Zentar, which condenses in 24 minutes the portrait of a society split between religious and traditional impositions and the needs of a new generation; on October 29th at the Massimo cinema in Lecce, the journey is the central theme in understanding the complex reality of the Egyptian territory through Beshay's journey in search of a family, a place to belong, in the film ‘Yomeddine’, the debut work of Egyptian director Abu Bakr Shawky, and the short film ‘Le Départ’ by Saïd Hamich, narrated in the first person by young Adil, who tells about his life and everything that the imminent departure from Morocco with his father will entail. A simple yet excellently told story on a painful and delicate theme, namely what it means to leave home and loved ones at a young age; on October 31st at Laltrocinema Cicolella in Foggia, the issues of migration and identity are tackled in the short film ‘Zakaria’ by Tunisian director Leyla Bouzid, depicting moments in the education of an Italo-Arab boy who must reclaim his original Arab culture, which he has never known, and the masterpiece by Senegalese director Djibril Diop Mambéty, ‘Hyènes’, inspired by ‘The Visit’ by Friedrich Dürrenmatt. A prophetic and clear-eyed look at post-colonial Africa, also reflecting on relations with Europe and individual and collective guilt.

Each screening will be followed by a discussion on the themes addressed in the film.

Through the cinema of Sub-Saharan and North Africa, the showcase explores the images, sounds, and colors of these countries. It highlights how African cinematography reflects social change, with traditions confronting modernity and evolving identity, and represents attachment to roots and ancestral traditions while facing the challenges of the modern system, often influenced by the West.

The films explore the nuances of daily life, highlighting the tensions and beauties that arise from the encounter between tradition and modernity. These films offer a deep insight into the experiences of those living between two worlds, highlighting the challenges of integration and the enrichment that comes from embracing diversity. With sensitivity and deep empathy, they invite us to reflect on the importance of tolerance and acceptance in a constantly evolving world.

The showcase is organized by Social Music Promoter, in collaboration with the Comboni Missionaries and the Abusuan Intercultural Association.
