Explosive Jazz Between Puglia and the United States
American trumpeter Hermon Mehari guest in Gaetano Partipilo's project
The concert by saxophonist Gaetano Partipilo with his Boom Collective will indeed be explosive, taking place on Sunday, November 3rd (8:30 PM) at the Madonna della Rosa auditorium in Molfetta. Featured as a special guest is the American trumpeter of Ethiopian descent, Hermon Mehari, a rising star in the world of jazz. This enticing offering by the Valente Musical Foundation is part of the Kaleidos '24 season directed by Pietro Laera, highlighting the new, explosive blend of Italian jazz. Through this project, Partipilo, a talented Puglian who artistically grew with the metropolitan sounds of the New York school of Steve Coleman and the M-Base movement, reflects on his homeland and gathers a true All Stars ensemble "made in Apulia."
After garnering accolades with the release of their self-titled debut album (published by Auand records in 2019) and live performances across Italy and Brazil, the Boom Collective made a strong comeback on the Italian scene in 2022 with a new album (also for Auand) titled "Leave & Meet" (in Barese it sounds like "leva e metti"), which featured a special participation by American vocalist Joanna Teters.
For this live show, Partipilo has called upon, in addition to Mehari, singer Angela Esmeralda, bassist Federico Pecoraro, and drummer Dario Congedo, all members of the extended collective with whom the bandleader recorded "Leave & Meet," an ever-changing and multifaceted work where each track tells its own story. Among them is "Puglia," which, not by chance, opens the album and best summarizes the feelings and artistic concept of the project. "Written with Angela during the lockdown," Partipilo recounts, "'Puglia' talks about that period, our land, and the imaginary journey searching for distant places, New York or Los Angeles or Rio de Janeiro, while always remaining firmly here."
Since its inception in 2018, the Boom Collective has sought to merge different styles and sounds, maintaining continuous contact with what's happening in the contemporary music world, always through the lens of jazz musicians sensitive to their time and place. In this Molfetta concert, the perspective widens with the inclusion of Hermon Mehari, considered one of the most talented trumpeters of the new generation, renowned on the international scene for his eclecticism and intense creativity.
