Churches to visit: Santa Maria Maggiore and Sant'Angelo

This initiative, part of the "CHRISTMAS Pro Loco A. Donvito 2024" series, offers the opportunity to explore local nativity scene traditions and the historical-religious heritage of Gioia del Colle. The tours, guided by Pro Loco volunteers, lead through the Nativity representations set up in the parishes, creating an itinerary that reveals the architectural and spiritual riches of the city.

**Information about the churches involved:**

- Church of Santa Maria Maggiore: Erected at the end of the 11th century by the will of Count Riccardo Siniscalco, originally dedicated to Saint Peter, the church features a vertically tripartite Baroque facade with a portal and an epigraph that testify to its construction.

- **Church of Sant'Angelo:** Also known as the Church of Saint Michael, underwent significant reconstruction in 1855 following damage caused by the 1854 earthquake. The church is linked to the presence of a chapel dedicated to Saint Michael, consecrated in 1500 by the Archbishop of Bari Landolfo along with 12 bishops of the diocese.
