It is said that it was Numa Pompilius, at the dawn of history, who dictated to the matrons of Rome the obligation of silence, imposing on them not to speak, even for necessary matters, in the absence of their husbands.

This rule is also followed by Roman literature, in which female voices are always filtered through male authors.

On Thursday, January 30th, at 7:00 PM, under the guidance of Irene Martino, Graziana Brescia and Mario Lentano present Writing about Women in Ancient Rome (Cairo Editore, 2024), a book written collaboratively that places women at the center and makes them protagonists of an often surprising narrative. It reveals new aspects in familiar texts and brings to light nuances that would otherwise remain hidden. Free admission.

Who is Graziana Brescia
Graziana Brescia is a professor of "Latin Language and Literature" at the University of Bari "Aldo Moro." Her research interests focus on Sallust, Virgil, Ovid, tragic Seneca, Latin declamation, the anthropology of the ancient world, and the legacy of classics and myths. She has authored numerous publications on female figures in ancient Rome. Among her monographs on this subject: Anna Soror and Others. Pairs of Sisters in Latin Literature (Pàtron, Bologna 2012); G. Brescia, The Violated Woman. Cases of Stuprum and Raptus in Latin Declamation (Edizioni Grifo, Lecce 2012); Juno and the Lover. Dynamics of a Female Conflict between Earth and Sky (ETS Pisa 2022).

Who is Mario Lentano
Professor of Latin Language and Literature at the University of Siena and a member of the Center for Anthropology and the Ancient World, directed by Maurizio Bettini; he primarily focuses on comic theater, scholastic rhetoric, and the complex of myths about the origins of Rome and the monarchical era. Among his most recent titles are Lucrezia. Life and Death of a Roman Matron (Carrocci editore, Rome, 2021), Romulus. The Legend of the Founder (Carrocci editore, Rome, 2021), Foreigner (Il Mulino, 2021). For Salerno editrice, he published Aeneas. The Last of the Trojans, the First of the Romans (2020) and Virgil (2022).
