Procession of the Sacred Mysteries and the Holy Wood

The height of the traditional rites of the Holy Week in Rutigliano takes place on Good Friday, with the long and slow Procession of the "Sacred Mysteries" and the "Holy Wood".
At 7:30 PM, amidst hundreds of devotees and tourists, the procession, organized by the Confraternity of Mary of Sorrows San Rocco and led by the prior Nunzio Pedone, will move slowly from the parish church of the Addolorata. It will start with the resounding sound of the "Troccola" (a medieval percussion instrument) and conclude with the traditional Passion marches performed by the local band.
Through the streets of the city (in darkness and lit only by votive lamps), the twelve statues representing the stages of Calvary will parade. They will be preceded by the penitential "Great Cross", heavy and of a somber black color, and followed by the "Dead Christ", covered with a white veil and laid in a simple glazed sarcophagus, and the "Addolorata", the "Mater Dolorosa" draped in black, with her face covered by a dark veil and her heart pierced by a sword.
Within the procession, the pastoral vicar of Rutigliano will carry the "Holy Wood", a fragment of the Cross on which Jesus was crucified. This relic, preserved since 1677 in the Collegiate Church, has been carried in procession every Good Friday through the streets of Rutigliano since 1714.
