Ten years have passed since the events narrated in “Ginevra.” The king is still alive, but his figure is weak, fragile, unstable: power is faltering, and the court lives in constant tension, filled with anticipation, resentments, and gossip. Ginevra remains a princess but is increasingly impatient, eager for her fate to unfold. Her husband Ariodante keeps spurring her on: when you lack power, you must learn to seize it.
But what will Ginevra be willing to do to claim the throne? How far will she go to become the first queen of Scotland? Around her, amidst her fears and fits of anger, the castle becomes a cage and a mirror: her sisters plot or drift away, the queen mother is imprisoned, and allies waver.
At the heart of this spiral moves a chorus of characters: Dalinda, the ancient handmaid turned silent and sharp shadow; Polinesso, the man once rejected who now lurks at the margins, ready to strike at the opportune moment; Ariodante, the loyal lover who first incites her and then begs her in vain to flee. And finally the Witch, a blind and fierce seer, who delivers to Ginevra a truth she refuses to hear. The kingdom is more fragile than it seems. Borders crumble, the army divides, the people’s voices grow tumultuous. War is at the doorstep.
Inspired by the structure and language of great Shakespearean tragedies, “Regina di carta” is a dramatic and political reflection on the desire to reign, the illusion of control, and the solitude of leadership. Ginevra is not just a queen; she is the face of power at the moment of collapse. And what remains is paper: fragile, burnable, forgettable.
