MUSEUM OF THE ABSURD - Theatrical Tour
Guided tours combining history and theater at the PRINCIPE ROMANAZZI CARDUCCI CIVIC MUSEUM OF SANTO MAURO_PUTIGNANO (BA)
The museum meets the theater of the absurd. The guided tour inside the Principe Guglielmo Romanazzi Carducci di Santo Mauro Civic Museum becomes an immersive and interactive experience where visitors encounter bizarre characters, conceived as keepers of the palace's stories and channels for the emotional and perceptual reactions of the guests. Theater becomes a channel of investigation and an exceptional cognitive tool aimed at building a creative bridge between past and present, between history and current society, between the memories of the place and the visitors.
A friendly and nosy concierge, a role taken from Eugène Ionesco's "The New Tenant," greets visitors, eager to show her noble "condo," hoping that someone might become a new tenant. She is a woman of generous spirit but inept at life, seeking to appropriate the place in some way, searching for a sense of belonging undermined by latent individualism.
Lucky, a role inspired by the character of the same name from Samuel Beckett's "Waiting for Godot," is a whimsical man with contemporary and youthful features, the soul of a servant and confidant of Prince Guglielmo, guiding guests by observing their reactions and seeking their help to write a new story where past, present, and future can coexist, affirming and confirming the value of the museum as a collective and shared cultural heritage. Lucky and the concierge accompany the guests during a museum tour full of surprises. Within the stately palace, four characters are illicitly staying, stuck in an indefinite time between the two World Wars, drawn from some of Samuel Beckett's plays waiting for someone to arrive, perhaps a certain Godot, perhaps the Prince, perhaps the guests of the prince. The nosy concierge, within her absurd plans, intends to evict them to rent the rooms to the visitors. Lucky intends to free them from their space-time imprisonment, from their eternal wait, to initiate a virtuous encounter between history and modernity, between memory and contemporaneity.
During the museum tour, we meet Vladimir and Estragon: two beggars with no particular role who have "seen it all" of the 20th century but, for some reason, remain stuck in the short century, in that middle time, waiting for someone to tell them how to live in the 21st century, how to change the story of a place, of themselves.
In the bathroom, a lady with curious features, always in search of love, embodies all the female figures that characterize Prince Guglielmo’s life: Winnie from Beckett’s "Happy Days". In the studies, we find the character of Hamm taken from the play "Endgame" by S. Beckett, recalling the very figure of the prince, both in his more authoritarian traits and in his more fragile ones.
The history of the museum intertwines with more popular anecdotes, the history of the characters, references to contemporaneity, the impressions and emotions of the visitors so that from an old story always arises a new story.
