In the austere and icy silence of a parish house located in a convent on the outskirts of Palermo, a young woman drags her fragile and vulnerable existence, among obsessive memories of a past filled with abominable monsters that still breathe on her present.
Viola has never truly killed them, never defeated her ghosts; they lie dormant due to medication and prayer in the depths of her soul, in the abysses of her conscience, where the shadows of dreams stretch and deform, often generating that vortex of anxiety, fear, and depression, which then turns into the pain of living. Viola never wanted that pregnancy, nor to become a mother, and yet, Grazia, her daughter, beautiful as the Madonna, is there by her side, taking care of the household chores, washing and hanging robes, serving mass, being a caretaker like her mother, always having to thank everyone and everything:
Viola for bringing her into the world; God for providence; Father Salvatore for the parish house where they live; the nuns for education and faith.
Many years have passed, Grazia is now a woman too, and her mind probes into their family past, while she dreams of building a future far from those walls.
Who was my father? Where is he? Why couldn't I attend a "normal" school and play with other children, like everyone else? Why can't I fall in love?
Why must I stay here, grow old, and die within these walls?
These are the questions that torment her and that she repeatedly asks her mother.
Viola does not answer, does not want to, cannot, or perhaps simply cannot. Delving into her past means illuminating the darkness of some memories, means sinking into anguish and anger.
You are an angel, Satan tempts you! Remember Eve! Out there, there is only sin! Here inside, you are safe! You will be a bride of Christ, I promised Father Salvatore, the Mother Abbess, and the Cross!
These are Viola's explanations, while she forcefully combs her long golden hair and forces her to kneel to recite the psalm of pure virgins.
Two women with a visceral relationship, with a blood bond, chasing and repelling each other like victim and executioner, in the chaos of life and death.
On one side madness, exaltation, religious fanaticism, Viola's sick and possessive love; on the other side, rebellion, the discovery of sex, revolutionary dreams, the social redemption Grazia strives for.
Two generations face off, inevitably clashing with each other.
Two diametrically opposed souls that can only trigger that short circuit that makes both women victims of a bigoted and hypocritical society.
Through a wrenching dialogue, filled with memories, anger, reclamation, and disappointment, a mysterious, magical, violent, and forgotten metropolitan periphery emerges, exposing monstrous everyday aspects unfolding in full indifference and without any sense of horror.
As usual, our members will be able to nourish not only the soul but also the body and quench their thoughts, with poetic dishes seasoned with rhyming vegetables, masterfully prepared by our actress/poet Renza Luxemburg and sprinkled with a fresh pink nectar, all km 0... 🍷🧆
So all that's left is to book your place to spend a splendid evening of theater, dance, good food, and good wine together!
We look forward to seeing you
