Moby Dick, an allegory of man's search for himself and exploration of mystery. In Melville's pages, it is revealed that abandoning the safety of land to aim for the truth of the open sea forever satisfies the instinct of any Ulysses and the ambition of any youth. The Pequod (the name of Captain Ahab's whaling ship) transforms, once at sea, into a microcosm, a medieval allegory of man, his destiny, his choices, or even a summary of the history of mankind. Ahab, in his determination to fight, even to the point of self-destruction or sacrifice, to know the absolute truth (because that is the meaning of his hunt for the whale) discovers (for all of us) the fatal limit of his madness lies in pride, the sin of sins.
"The great drama, the great beauty of Ahab's figure arises from this: that Ahab's tragedy is that of the writer and at the same time that of man himself.
Not only that, but a new degree of intensity is added for us moderns, because this tragedy is the same as that of modern man" (Agostino Lombardo).
Melville's Moby Dick, a masterpiece of American literature, is also considered a fundamental work of world literature.
