Ricky Portera
Born in Messina, he moved with his family to Modena two months after his birth. Ricky Portera's first approach to the music scene dates back to July 1969, when he joined Club72, a group formed a few years earlier in Castelfranco Emilia, including Danilo Bastoni (keyboards), Augusto Menozzi (vocals), Renato Tabarroni (percussions), Gianni Suzzi (bass), Gabriele Mattioli (tenor and baritone sax), Dino Melotti (tenor sax), and Portera (lead guitar). He is the founder, with Gaetano Curreri, of Stadio, with whom he also tried his hand at singing in the tracks "Un fiore per Hal" (featured on the group's first album and the soundtrack of Borotalco) and "La mattina" (featured on the Q disc Chiedi chi erano i Beatles).
A historic collaborator of Lucio Dalla, he was also a guitarist for Ron and other Italian authors like Eugenio Finardi and Loredana Bertè. Dalla wrote and dedicated to Portera the song "Grande figlio di puttana," which became, in 1982, Stadio's first major hit. After leaving Stadio, he continued his career as a session man, collaborating with Nek, Samuele Bersani, Massimo Bozzi, Robert & Cara (produced by Dalla). He participated in the Sanremo Festival in 1996 alongside Paola Turci for the song "Volo così" and in 2006 with Anna Tatangelo for the song "Essere una donna." In 1990, he released his first self-titled solo album. The album featured collaborations with saxophonist James Thompson and Giovanni Pezzoli of Stadio.
In 1996, he returned to work with Dalla both in the studio and live, after almost ten years apart. In 2007, he released his second solo album, "Ci sono cose," in which he also revisits the classic of Stadio, "Canzoni alla radio," written in 1986 together with Luca Carboni. For the occasion, he reassembled the original core of Stadio, Giovanni Pezzoli on drums, Marco Nanni on bass, and Gaetano Curreri. The same year he received honorary citizenship from Mistretta, in the province of Messina, his father's hometown. On the initiative of a local youth association, a guitar school for both beginners and non-beginners was inaugurated, taught by the artist himself.
He carried out a tour with the group Custodie Cautelari featuring six Italian guitarists; from this experience, a live CD titled "La notte delle chitarre" was born. In April 2010, he participated as a soloist on the album "Piano Car" by composer Stefano Ianne, along with Trilok Gurtu and Nick Beggs of Kajagoogoo. He then accompanied Ianne on the album's promotional tour. Also in 2010, he was part of GIG (Genuine Italian Guitars), along with Luca Colombo, Maurizio Vercon, and Peppe Scarciglia. In 2014, the CD "Fottili" was released (music production by Beppe Aleo for Videoradio), featuring important guests such as Gaetano Curreri, Pino Scotto, Pierdavide Carone, Luca Madonia, and others. In 2016, the CD "Una sera con Lucio" was released (music production by Beppe Aleo for Videoradio). In 2022, the CD "Perché io sò io... e voi non siete un cazzo" was released - music production by Beppe Aleo - (Videoradio). In 2024, he participates in the trilogy "Libidal" (La Cellula Records/Maxsound) by Davide Matrisciano, in the track "Poltergeist Boom," accompanied on bass by Leland Sklar.
