REBECCA CLARKE’S WORLD
A concert entirely dedicated to the works of the British composer Rebecca Clarke
On Tuesday, 25 November 2025 at 7:00 pm in the Auditorium of the Fondazione Paolo Grassi, the concert season of the Centro Artistico Musicale “Paolo Grassi” in collaboration with the Fondazione Paolo Grassi presents a new event dedicated to the musical universe of Rebecca Clarke—one of the twentieth century’s most important British composers.
A very sensitive and talented person, Clarke established herself at a time when female presence in the composition was still rare. Author of about a hundred works—many of which have never been published and are still owned by her heirs—she devoted a significant part of her production to the viola, her favourite instrument.
Her music reflects the influence of the great artists of the early twentieth century, from Ravel and Bloch to Debussy, with whom she shares the use of harmony and sound color as instruments of sensory evocation. Moreover, affinities with Scriabin in piano writing embodies a rich and refined style.
According to a 1987 review, “It is impressive that such beautifully written and deeply moving music has remained hidden in the dark all these years.”
