A hug between science and art that finds its ideal place in schools.
From Monday, February 9, to Saturday, February 14, the third edition of “SteamFestival – Science in Your Pocket” will take place at the IISS Tommaso Fiore in Modugno, aimed at bringing students closer to scientific disciplines, enhancing their knowledge, and connecting it to the arts of cinema, theater, and music.
A week of meetings, lectures, screenings, workshops, and performances focused on combating educational poverty, with a special emphasis on the more vulnerable and fragile adolescent groups. The festival is organized by the IISS Tommaso Fiore in collaboration with the Social Cooperative I Bambini di Truffaut, E.S.T. – Ethics, Science, Theater (a project of the Compagnia del Sole), the National Institute of Astrophysics (INAF), the University of Bari “Aldo Moro”, the Institute of the History of Science – Galileo Galilei Museum, with artistic direction by Giancarlo Visitilli.
“Promoting STEAM disciplines in schools does not just mean ‘teaching more science,’ but transforming the way students perceive reality, with an approach based on problem-solving and creativity, through the lens of art,” explained Sara Giannetto, the school leader of IISS Tommaso Fiore in Modugno. “The STEAM Festival offers our students and the community the opportunity to learn, from the voices of researchers, about the most current discoveries in scientific thought and to understand fully that science has no gender and no boundaries, except for those that humanity imposes on itself.”
“For years, we have been told about the importance of STEM subjects, without detracting from the humanities,” explains Giancarlo Visitilli. “We often read that girls and boys are lacking in these subjects, and this third edition of the STEAM Festival aims to be primarily an educational proposal that includes art among the strictly technical and scientific subjects.”
Students will engage with artists, experts, communicators, and teachers from various scientific disciplines coming from the academic world and will be the protagonists of a different learning path, which involves their direct participation in the construction of knowledge through both theoretical lessons and practical experiences. All of this will become the object of study and further exploration alongside figures from the art world, for the reworking and production of cartoons, short films, and theatrical performances on the themes addressed in the morning with scientists. Materials that can also be used in teaching contexts, making them more accessible for students who face learning difficulties or have a lack of interest.
Facilitating understanding and making the STEAM universe more engaging are the objectives of the lecture classes scheduled every morning at 10 AM.
It starts on Monday, February 9, with astrophysicist Marco Castellani and “It’s Not What It Seems: Einstein and the New Universe,” followed by “AI Live – An Artificial Intelligence Conference” by the Compagnia del Sole.
On Tuesday, February 10, Tiziana Clelia Storlazzi, associate professor of Genetics at the University of Bari, will present “Chromosomes, Genes, and Who We Are: A Direct Relationship?”
On Wednesday, February 11, Sandra Lucente, a professor of Mathematical Analysis, will present “I Prove Monsters – The Numbers We See and Those We Imagine.”
On Thursday, February 12, Alessio Perniola will lead “Mystery AI – Solve the Case to Discover the Secrets of Artificial Intelligence and the Basics of Cybersecurity.”
Friday, February 13, will conclude the cycle with Andrea Bernardoni, a science historian from the Galileo Galilei Museum, presenting “The Flight Code: Fiction or Reality?”
“The STEAM has a primary intent,” continues Visitilli, “to promote scientific dissemination among young people, with the help of ‘giants’ that schools often struggle to meet. Knowledge, research, and creativity will involve about a thousand students and teachers from the Tommaso Fiore Institute in a journey of beauty and wonder.”
The festival will also feature a screening of the film “DNA – The Roots of Love” by Maïwenn and a trilogy of theatrical performances by the Compagnia del Sole.
It will start with “The Universe is a Mattress – And the Stars a Sheet,” written by Francesco Niccolini and directed and performed by Flavio Albanese, winner of the Eolo Awards 2018.
Following are “The Numbers of the Soul,” inspired by Plato's Meno, and “The Flight Code – From Studies, Drawings, and Notes of Leonardo da Vinci,” both performed by Albanese.
The days will be enriched with creative-scientific workshops and high-impact visual demonstrations by Alessio Perniola, featuring live experiments and demonstrations, to bring students closer to science as a tool for understanding the world and developing critical thinking.
