CARMEN - Festival della Valle d'Itria 2026
The opera, one of the most famous in the world, is being presented again in Martina Franca in a version that has never been performed before, featuring the score originally prepared by Bizet in 1874, before the directors of the Opéra Comique de Paris requested significant changes in anticipation of the premiere in 1875. Thanks to the critical work of Paul Prévost, the publisher Bärenreiter has returned to the composer’s autograph manuscripts of the version he envisioned, delivering a Carmen in its original form as an opéra-comique, with extensive use of melodrama, and dialogues recited against a rich orchestral accompaniment.

Free and untamed, Carmen wants to live her life – and she would rather die than submit to the will of a man. She will die at the hands of her spurned lover, with a tragic ending that overshadows the conventions of the genre, set against the fiery atmosphere of the bullfight, surrounded by the music of one of the most performed operas in the history of melodrama.

Fabio Luisi, the musical director of the Festival, offers for the first time in his long career an interpretation of Bizet's masterpiece; the direction, sets, and lighting are by Denis Krief, a highly experienced artist returning to Martina Franca after a long absence.
