Dualismi: dal reale all’astratto

From September 4 to 10, the Church of the Holy Spirit in Ostuni will host “Dualisms: From the Real to the Abstract,” a contemporary art group exhibition organized by Espressioni d’Arte. The exhibition brings together eight artists, eight sensibilities, and eight different modes of expression in a harmonious and respectful dialogue between painting, sculpture, and 3D-printed art.

The exhibition’s central focus is the variety of perspectives, capable of moving from the real to free abstract interpretation. Angelo Rapanà reinterprets traditional craftsmanship from Salento through a contemporary sensibility. In his sculptures, stone becomes a poetic language and a tool for reflection: through the sculptor’s patient and skillful work, the material comes alive, preserving the fascination of memory while opening itself to original forms.

Technological innovation meets sculptural research in the works of Alessandra Di Maio: 3D-printed sculptures that combine digital modeling with experimentation in materials. Her abstract, futuristic, and surreal forms—fluid and sinuous—seem to come alive in space.

Painting offers an intense encounter between different forms of expression. Mary Fanelli depicts reality in a simple, spontaneous, naïve, childlike, and instinctive manner, relying on vivid colors and a fairytale-like imagination capable of breaking the rules of reality to create magical and moving worlds. At the opposite end of the spectrum, yet fully in harmony with the theme of the exhibition, Isabella Altavilla presents hyperrealistic pencil drawings characterized by extraordinary precision and details so accurate that they resemble photographic snapshots.

The works of Ilona Gentilcore capture moments and atmospheres, transforming each scene into memory and movement. Her rich, deep oil paintings retain what they depict while allowing underlying stories to emerge.

Also featured is Fulvia De Nicolò, who moves between expressionism and material abstraction, using vivid colors and intense combinations; Lia Barbara, a contemporary conceptual abstract artist who shapes a warm, brilliant, and vibrant palette on her canvases; and finally Sabrina Prudentino, who creates geometric compositions in energetic colors, capable of producing a powerful visual and emotional impact.

“Dualisms” invites the public to observe the many forms of contemporary art: different from one another, yet united by a shared inclination toward exploration and expression.
