Charlotte Thiis-Evensen
Muratcentoventidue Artecontemporanea is pleased to announce a new solo exhibition by Norwegian artist Charlotte Thiis-Evensen, following her previous exhibition at the gallery in 2020.
Charlotte Thiis-Evensen is a filmmaker, visual artist, journalist and program director.
She has a MA of Literary Science from the University of Oslo and has studied at the National Academy of the Arts. She has shown her work internationally as well as at local institutions such as the Lillehammer Art Museum, OSL Contemporary, and The Artist's House. Her films are screened at festivals in France, Germany, Spain, Norway, and elsewhere. Beside production of art she has been working as a journalist at the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation for fifteen years both with documentary film and with journalistic programs.
As an artist she works with documentarism in video, photo and installations. In her works she touches on close family relationships, everyday rituals, cultural histories and issues related to identity.
The artistic practice of Charlotte Thiis-Evensen has always occupied the subtle boundary between sociological inquiry and the intimacy of biographical narrative. Through video, photography, and installation, the Norwegian artist analyzes the subtle and often invisible social and familial power structures that limit, condition, or define an individual’s freedom of action. Her perspective, deeply influenced by a solid background in literature and television documentary making, never judges. Instead, she positions herself as a careful, silent observer, capable of capturing the exact moment when human identity forms, resists, or cracks beneath the weight of external societal expectations. In her works, the human body and face become the primary territories for a universal narrative. By utilizing the temporal expansion of slow motion and the visual purity of portraiture, Thiis-Evensen transforms the most ordinary gestures into existential acts of deep vulnerability.
The exhibition’s centerpiece, the video-film Movements (2024), deepens this research by focusing on a crucial and dramatically ephemeral phase of existence: early youth, specifically the age of twenty. The work's visual apparatus alternates between the performances of young men and women inside a film studio, captured as they dance or choose to remain in static poses. Each protagonist moves to a musical track chosen in complete autonomy, a crucial detail that transforms the soundtrack into an act of pure personal expression and identity self-determination in front of the camera.
Culturally and historically, the twenties represent the golden age of political, social, and personal idealism, a moment when the structures of the world still seem malleable and open to redefinition. However, Thiis-Evensen’s lens digs beneath this mythologized surface to capture a profound, chronic, and beautiful insecurity. The video isolates this very emotional limbo before it permanently dissolves into adulthood. Through the artist's lens, a poignant dichotomy emerges between the potential strength, energy, and grace of these young bodies in motion, and the fragile awareness that the aging process and integration into the social system will often coincide with the fading of that idealist drive.
In Movements, dance strips away any purely aesthetic or choreographic intent to evolve into a tool of silent yet radical resistance. The youths' gestures become an intimate negotiation between what society expects from a generation and the absolute desire of individuals to reclaim their space in the world. The work thus transforms into a universal reflection on the transience and vulnerability of youth, a visual archive of bodies dancing and resisting, desperately trying to move to their own rhythm before time imposes its rules.

Short Bio
Charlotte Thiis-Evensen (1968) lives and works in Oslo, Norway. She has an MA of Literary Science from the University of Oslo and have studied art at the National Academy of the Arts in Oslo. As an artist she is working with documentarism in video, photo and installations. Several of her artworks are about how unspoken power structures seriously limit the individual’s freedom of action. Beside production of art she has been working as a journalist at the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation for fifteen years both with documentary film and with journalistic programs. For the last five years Charlotte Thiis-Evensen has had her own Television Program in the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation called The Architects Home. She is both director and presenter in this program. Thiis-Evensen has exchibited in national and international venues and artfilmfestivals including: The Artist's House, Oslo in Norway, Bergen Art Museum (KODE) in Bergen, Norway. Riga Photography Biennial in Latvia, OSL Contemporary, Oslo. DOK Leipzig, in Germany, Documentary Festival in Goyang City South Korea, The National Museum of Art, Oslo in Norway and DokumentART, Neubrandenburd in Germany.
