The show is the story of the restless and tormented life of Empress Elisabeth of Austria, commonly known as Sissi. The text unfolds in various scenes, each of which examines some aspects of the Empress's character and thoughts: from philosophy to sex, from politics to art. The overall portrait that gradually emerges highlights a woman as unconventional as she is deeply frustrated by the rigidity and ruthlessness of the Viennese Court, but also the great poetry and desire for freedom of a creature who considered herself eternally "caged". Anorexic, eternally mourning the absurd deaths of two of her children, she develops a painful and angry sensitivity at the same time, but anything but abstract, also directed towards the most delicate social issues: from the suffering of ethnic minorities, to the abuses suffered by the proletariat. Anti-imperialist and disgusted by the atrocities of the wars raging around her, Sissi obsessively dedicates herself to the care of her body, her hairstyle, the choice of shoes, a barrier against the sense of death that hovers around her. A prophet of the imminent collapse of the Habsburg Empire, Sissi shows us that world as a paradigm of our world, of a present where the wounds of oppression, racism and war are more virulent than ever. Sissi the Empress is a text where the "cries" of the unfortunate Sissi are raised high, empress against her will but an unrepeatable woman, whose wounded sensitivity speaks to all of us, to our wounds.
