Pirandello Pulp - Teatro Franco Parenti

We are in rehearsal, on the stage where Pirandello's "The Game of Roles" is set to take place. Maurizio, the director of the show, was expecting another technician for the light setup, but Carmine shows up instead, who knows nothing about the show and suffers from vertigo. Maurizio is forced to go through the entire script to make him understand, and Carmine, in order to avoid climbing the ladder to set up the lights, starts discussing every detail of the direction. His ideas come from a dangerously lived sexuality, but are innovative, and Maurizio goes from irritation to enthusiasm, ultimately conceiving the idea of a pulp direction: a "Game of Roles" set in a squalid suburban parking lot, where couples engage in exchanges. The roles are reversed, and now it is Maurizio who goes up and down the ladder to point the lights, while Carmine has become the thinking mind. It seems like a simple game of role reversal, but the discovery of unsettling truths will shake the precarious balance found by the characters and will lead the comedy towards an unexpected ending. The metatheatre, a specialty of Pirandello, is interpreted by Edoardo Erba in a more current and irreverent key. Yet the lesson of the Sicilian master suddenly bursts forth, when the relationship between the two characters goes beyond the limit of predictability.
