Le Città Visibili - Enrico lo Verso

The show parodies Calvino's work "Invisible Cities", published in 1972 and written, according to the author himself, "like a poem to pay tribute to the modern city", and, like every other work by the same author, uses the narrative pretext to point out social themes, still and always extremely topical. Thus, the imaginary cities that populate the story are a metaphor for many things: memories, desires, signs, languages, exchanges of words, desires, memories. Calvino's book presents itself as a series of travel reports that Marco Polo makes to Kublai Khan, the emperor of the Tartars. To this melancholic emperor, who has understood that his immense power counts for very little because the world is falling into ruins, a visionary traveler tells of impossible cities... In the theatrical adaptation by Alessandra Pizzi, Enrico Lo Verso retraces the "stages" of Marco Polo's journey, accompanying the reader/spectator in the discovery and "rediscovery" of places and cities, no longer imaginary, but real. Using Calvino's combinatorial scheme, typical of his narrative style, the show "accompanies" the reader through squares and streets of villages, skyscrapers and ports, evoking large and small cities scattered around the world. In his original journey, the Marco Polo depicted by Lo Verso meets the great authors of the past and asks them to "tell him" about the city that is most dear to them. Thus he "stops" in Pessoa's Lisbon, in Neruda's Djibouti, in Hemingway's New York, in Borges's Argentina, in Lorca's Spain. And each time he encounters the "colors" of the land and the musicality of the places. Alessandra Pizzi introduces the reader/spectator to the articulated and "fantastic" world of Calvino's thought, retracing its modernity. Enrico Lo Verso accompanies the reader/spectator on a journey through literature, poems, images, and stories in a journey through places of memory, recognizable cities and mythological places, punctuated by an extraordinary live soundtrack performed by musicians.
