Edipo Re

Considered one of the most beautiful theatrical works of all time, Sophocles' "Oedipus Rex" represents the universal symbol of the eternal conflict between freedom and necessity, between guilt and fate. Having risen to power thanks to his ability to "shed light through words"—a skill that allowed him to defeat the Sphinx that plagued the city of Thebes—Oedipus is compelled, through a frenzied retrospective investigation, to discover that his past is a long sequence of horrors and crimes, until he acknowledges the dramatic truth of the Chorus's final, desolate words: "Never call a man happy until he has passed his final day."

In a city we never see, a lament comes from afar. It is Thebes, ravaged by plague. A group of people has not slept in days. How can they be saved? To whom should they turn to heal the dying city? At the center of the scene, at the center of the city, at the center of the theater, there is him, Oedipus. He, who had illuminated the riddle of the Sphinx with the light of his words, now faces the most difficult of questions: who killed Laius, the former king of Thebes? The answer that Oedipus seeks is clear from the start and resounds in just two words: "it’s you." But Oedipus cannot accept such a great truth; he cannot see it. He prefers to look elsewhere. It will be the voice of Apollo, the hidden god, the oblique god, to guide him through an investigation in which the investigator will prove to be the culprit. It will soon be understood that the doctor who was supposed to heal the city is the disease. Because it is he, Oedipus, who is the murderer and thus the cause of the contagion. The light of truth is the gift of the god. But it is also his curse.
