International Conference “Writing for the Court, Writing for Institutions. Linguistic Simplification, Translation and Comparison, Artificial Intelligence” at the University of Salento

The international conference “Writing for the Court, Writing for Institutions. Linguistic Simplification, Translation and Comparison, Artificial Intelligence” will be held on Friday, November 15, 2024, at the Conference Hall of the Rectorate of the University of Salento, starting at 9:15 AM. The event is organized by Professor Maria Vittoria Dell’Anna as part of the Nationally Significant Project AttiChiari: an unprecedented database for scholars and citizens.

During the conference, experts in linguistics, law, translation, and court professionals from national and international universities and institutions will explore topics related to effective communication between institutions and citizens, in Italy and abroad, in Italian and other languages.

“We are very pleased with the AttiChiari project,” comments Professor Maria Vittoria Dell’Anna. “It has been an unprecedented and fascinating research journey, as well as an opportunity for teaching and outreach, involving students and professional associations. This highlights the important cultural and scientific purpose of the project in opening up to legal professionals and projecting itself beyond the university.”

The day's program includes welcoming addresses from Maria Grazia Guido (Director of the Department of Humanities), Luigi Melica (Director of the Department of Legal Sciences), Stefano Polidori (President of the Law Degree Course), and Antonio De Mauro (President of the Bar Association of Lecce). The opening speech will be delivered by Sergio Lubello, President of the Association for the History of the Italian Language.

A central moment of the conference will be the presentation of the results of the project AttiChiari, with the participation of the heads of the involved research units: Jacqueline Visconti (University of Genoa, national coordinator), Riccardo Gualdo and Federigo Bambi (University of Tuscia and Florence and Members of the Academy of the Crusca), and Maria Vittoria Dell’Anna. Additionally, Minerva, the first database of procedural acts in Italy, developed by the research group of the project, will be presented to the public.

At 5:30 PM, during the conference, the book “The Language and Writing of the Forensic: History, Topics, Perspectives,” edited by Professor Dell’Anna and published by Giappichelli publisher, will be presented. The session will be moderated by Luigi Melica and will include contributions from Antonio De Mauro and Pier Luigi Portaluri, a full professor of Administrative Law at UniSalento.

The conference is sponsored by the Academy of the Crusca and the CNR Institute of Legal Informatics and Judicial Systems. The event is accredited with the Bar Association of Lecce (3 professional credits for each session) and the AITI-Italian Association of Translators and Interpreters (for a total of 8 credits).

The initiative aims to provide a significant contribution to the debate on the simplification of legal and institutional language, highlighting, among other things, the opportunities offered by linguistic comparison and translation, and artificial intelligence.
