An undisputed masterpiece of early German sound cinema, *The Blue Angel* launched a new female myth that would influence history beyond just cinema. The ambiguous, sensual, and cynical cabaret singer Lola Lola is an iconic character, the first that Marlene Dietrich played in her long collaboration (eight films) with Joseph von Sternberg, the director who molded her image as a fatal, free, and emancipated woman. Endowed with beauty, charm, and extraordinary acting skills, Marlene Dietrich is much more than a diva; she is one of the great female figures of the twentieth century, capable of challenging and changing societal norms. "Her Lola Lola, which thrust her into the limelight, is the triumph of eros and thanatos for European culture. The professor who succumbs to her husky, erotic allure is an example of the Weimar crisis. Stars and history forever intertwined in a film that is, in its own way, perverse" (Roy Menarini).

Restored by Friedrich-Wilhelm-Murnau-Stiftung in collaboration with Bundesarchiv at the Omnimago and L’Immagine Ritrovata laboratories, starting from a nitrate negative duplicate and a duplicate negative used for the missing scenes.
