International appeal and communicative immediacy are the distinctive features of the Klaviol Trio, the classical ensemble that will take center stage in Manduria on Saturday, April 12, for the second seasonal event of "Acustica | emozioni in purezza", a series curated by artistic director Salvatore Moscogiuri for Artilibrio, with the organizational partnership of Produttori di Manduria.
Under the ancient vaults of the Museum of Primitivo Wine Civilization, the harmonies of some great twentieth-century composers will resonate—composers who contributed to reshaping the traditional concept of classical music by employing diverse styles while steering clear of the technical-academic experimentalism that was highly fashionable among the avant-garde of their time.
Immersed in film soundtracks, theatrical compositions, and other influences, the Acustica audience will embark on a journey through "musical scenes," largely familiar to the collective imagination and accessible even to those less accustomed to chamber music, thanks in part to the popularity of their composers: Francis Poulenc, Nino Rota, and Astor Piazzolla.
This journey is made cohesive by the interpretative sensitivity of the trio, composed of Giambattista Ciliberti (clarinet), Flavio Maddonni (violin), and Piero Rotolo (piano). Through the Klaviol project, they have translated their expressive talents and performance abilities into a hallmark of artistic maturity recognized both in Italy and abroad.
The trio’s individual careers further attest to their excellence.
A clarinet graduate, Giambattista Ciliberti was already pioneering new ideas in the classical music scene in 1987 when he founded the "Mauro Giuliani" trio, an unusual ensemble featuring clarinet, flute, and guitar. This experience allowed him to perform across Italy and in prestigious international venues such as the Auditorio Nacional in Madrid, the India International Center in New Delhi, the Théâtre Charles Dullin in Chambéry, France, as well as in Kolkata, Mumbai, Casablanca, Tangier, Rabat, Athens, Valletta, Gozo, Cairo, and Alexandria.
In the 1990s, Ciliberti served as principal solo clarinetist in "La Banda", a project led by Mediterranean jazz pioneer Pino Minafra. With this wind orchestra, he participated in major festivals from Munich to Berlin, Graz to Le Mans, and London to Brighton. Further prestigious experiences came with the Collegium Musicum orchestral ensemble, with which he also performed at the Quirinal Palace.
Ciliberti teaches clarinet at the Conservatory of Messina and has several recordings to his credit.
Flavio Maddonni holds degrees in both violin and viola and has also specialized in chamber music and orchestral conducting. His intense concert career has taken him across Italy and to numerous other countries, including Sweden, Tunisia, Germany, Romania, Bolivia, Argentina, and Ecuador. He has performed alongside acclaimed musicians such as Benedetto Lupo and Javier Girotto. As a soloist, he has graced prestigious international stages, including the Teatro de la Ciudad de Puebla, the Auditorio Ciudad de León, the Cervantino Festival in Guanajuato, Mexico, Fordham University in New York, the International Festival of Renaissance and Baroque Music in Santa Cruz, Bolivia, and the Brahms Festival in Pörtschach, Austria.
With the International Orchestra of Italy, he has performed across Europe, Asia, and the Americas, under the baton of renowned conductors such as Riccardo Chailly and alongside world-class soloists such as Salvatore Accardo and Mstislav Rostropovich. As a conductor, he has performed in France and England. He has recorded numerous CDs and collaborated with major broadcasters, including BBC, Radio France, Rai, Bolivision, and Fox Television.
Maddonni is also a professor of Music Theory at the Conservatory of Monopoli.
After earning his degree in Piano and completing numerous advanced training courses, Piero Rotolo has won twenty first prizes in national and international piano and chamber music competitions. In addition to performing in Italy, he has given concerts in numerous foreign countries, including the United States, where he had the honor of playing at New York’s Williamson Theatre, Steinway Hall, and the Italian Cultural Institute. Notable performances include concerts in Spain for the "Andrés Segovia" Foundation in Linares, in Bulgaria for the State Philharmonic of Shoumen, and in Moldova for the Philharmonic of Radio and Television in Chișinău. He has also given significant performances in France, Spain, and Romania.
With the "Tommaso Traetta" Chamber Orchestra, he participated in the recording of the album "Profili", dedicated to modern and contemporary composers from Apulia.
A professor at the Conservatory of Monopoli, Rotolo has long been committed to promoting the work of Apulian composer Niccolò van Westerhout, performing his complete piano series "Insonni" on numerous occasions and recording his violin and piano compositions for Rai.
The concert on April 12 is free to attend and will begin at 8:30 PM, with doors opening at 8:15 PM.
