• THE BOOK •
Vera has never been alone. Since she was a child, a voice has accompanied her everywhere: wakes her at night, pressures her, consoles her. It's the voice of her brother Cè, who died when she was four years old. It's an ironic and sharp voice, capable of giving her whimsical thoughts like: "There is no synonym for synonym" or "Snow is proof that you don't need to shout to be seen." But it's also a severe judge, putting her on the spot with a simple question: "Are you truly Vera?" But who was Cè? To her parents, he was the perfect son, and Vera lived every day in his shadow. Every choice is an impossible comparison, even studying Law: does Vera do it for herself or to chase a ghost? Luckily, Gin, her best friend, is there to make her laugh and feel less strange. Then something inexplicable happens. Vera knows she shouldn't listen to Cè's voice. Yet, one day, she decides to throw everything off and chase a ladybug behind the gates of a clinic. Here she meets Francesco, a boy who seems to know her better than anyone else. Perhaps he's the only one who can help her uncover the secret her family has been hiding for years. Because Francesco teaches her a simple but difficult-to-accept thing: Vera isn't crazy. She's just alive. And being alive is sometimes not so different from being crazy.
• THE LOCATION •
An ancient 17th-century Apulian farm, located in a vast plain of the pre-Murgian zone, at 340 meters altitude, in the heart of the regional natural park "Terra delle Gravine", between Crispiano and Martina Franca. The main activities of the farm are the production of organic extra-virgin olive oil, durum wheat, as well as the breeding of magnificent Apulian Podolica cattle and Murgese horses. The farm also includes Mediterranean scrub woods where wild boars, hares, porcupines, foxes, wolves, badgers, pheasants, thrushes, woodcocks, and many other bird species live freely. Since 2007, Pilano has also been an agritourism and offers the possibility to stay in the ancient structures, restored from the typical stables and trulli of the 1600s, surrounding the manor house with bed & breakfast service. Moreover, the large external courtyards and the row of original trulli provide an enviable and authentic setting for weddings, events, and ceremonies. Very recently, Masseria Pilano has been enriched with a pool dedicated to events, relaxation, or for those simply wanting to enjoy the surrounding nature. Several years ago, Pilano received the prestigious five Sunflowers agritourism recognition, the first in Southern Italy.
• THE WINES •
Wine has been part of the Miali family for four generations. It was in 1886 that Elvino Miali started the company’s story, founding the winery and vinifying the grapes of Valle d’Itria in Martina Franca. This marked the beginning of a story made of passion, love for the land, and an artisanal approach to everything done. Currently, Cantine Miali's labels number 18, grouped into four selections representing various viewpoints on winemaking: the Classics, Single Vineyard, Special Selections, and Cru. Today, Michele, Francesco, and Marcello Miali represent the fourth generation of the family, having joined the company in the late '90s, carrying forward the aim to increase the distribution of Apulian wines with continuous technical updates, seeking complete quality and attention to detail. Each year, they produce 400/500 thousand liters of wine, serving eleven different countries. The main grapes are Verdeca, Fiano Minutolo, Falanghina, Primitivo, Negroamaro, Susumaniello, and Shiraz. They export 28% of the total revenue.
