Who we are
The Association of Little Canary Enthusiasts APS (apac aps) was founded in 2022 from the great passion and decades of experience of its president Giuseppe Albergo, a highly decorated and world-renowned ornithological breeder, who discovered as a teenager the emotional benefits that the companionship of a canary can generate.
What we do
Our core is Pet Education: we bring our canaries into schools, pediatric hospitals, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, and wherever our presence is requested. We offer free activities that, in addition to conveying ornithological knowledge, promote wellness and respect for animals.
At the same time, we passionately help and support all those who wish to enter this world, offering practical advice and support to anyone wishing to raise even a single canary. The association was created to welcome and guide the "little enthusiasts": people who, while not professional breeders, wish to experience the joy of the companionship and care of these extraordinary animals.
Our beliefs
For us, the canary represents much more than just an inhabitant of a cage, kept for aesthetic pleasure or to listen to its song. Our daily experience teaches us that the canary soon becomes a true life companion, capable of forming an emotional bond with its caregiver. Its presence at home or in the facilities where we conduct our Pet Education has a tangible impact on people's well-being: the canary brings lightness to the days, offers a smile in moments of loneliness, provides comfort and emotional stimuli even to those going through difficult situations, such as illnesses, moments of vulnerability, or isolation.
The experience of giving
As an association, we strongly believe that the well-being and joy that come from encountering a canary should be accessible to everyone, especially those who need it the most. For this reason, we have often chosen to donate our canaries to children, the elderly, or people going through difficult times, always in agreement and with the involvement of their families.
For us, the act of giving is not just handing over an animal but a true act of care and attention: we support those who receive the canary through the early stages of their experience, offering advice, support, and all the information needed to ensure a serene and respectful environment.
Often this small gesture turns into a smile, a word of comfort, a new motivation to face daily life.
Our supporters
We currently have over 300 supporters: people of all ages and backgrounds who share with us the passion for canaries and the desire to spread wellness, knowledge, and solidarity. Among them are experienced breeders, casual enthusiasts, and those who may own just one canary, as well as many friends who have chosen to trust us and accompany us in our educational, social, and outreach activities.
Join us
Joining our community is simple. Each year there is a voluntary donation that allows you to receive the calendar with photos of all the supporters. This way, you become part of our family of enthusiasts and are listed with them.
Supporters are added to a WhatsApp group, where enthusiasts and experienced breeders help each other by sharing advice and solutions.
Every 45 days, we also meet virtually on Google Meet with a video call to exchange more information, share experiences, and receive help in breeding.
Everyone is welcome: those with many canaries, those with just one, or those who simply want to learn more about the world of canaries and the association's activities.
For us, even questions, stories, or simple messages contribute to making the group a rich and useful community for everyone.

Pet Education
"Pet Education" is the name we have chosen to indicate the primary activity of our association.
It aims to be a special and innovative way of learning and well-being together with animals.
It is an activity that develops around two fundamental pillars: naturalistic education and emotional interaction with one or more subjects.
Our principal animal is clearly the canary, and the activity demonstrates how it can bring joy, companionship, and wellness into people's lives.
The choice to define a specific name for our outreach is linked to the already known presence of Pet Therapy. Pet Therapy is governed by national and regional regulations aimed at ensuring the effectiveness of the therapy and animal welfare, recognizing five animals for this purpose: dog, cat, horse, donkey, rabbit.
Our "Pet Education" distances itself from the therapeutic intent, which is not our responsibility, and focuses on the informational and relational approach, where the canary becomes the protagonist, bringing unexpected positive emotions such as serenity and curiosity, in respect for living beings.
Our outreach activities are organized into experiential workshops, educational meetings, and socialization moments designed to engage groups of children, disabled people, and the elderly in educational, recreational, or care settings, areas we currently prefer.
During the meetings, which last about an hour:
Different types of canaries are presented, many of which are accustomed to interacting with people and remaining calm even outside their cages;
Slides and images are shown to tell the story of the canary, its origins, habits, and how to care for it;
Chicks, eggs (not fertile) are displayed, and the reproductive process is explained;
The role of the Italian Ornithological Federation (FOI) is discussed, explaining its fundamental role in the existence and conservation of different breeds of canaries;
Canaries fly freely in the surrounding environment, then return to their cages, which they recognize as home;
Participants have the opportunity to stroke and hold the canaries on their hands, experiencing a physical and tactile interaction that provokes tenderness, joy, and wonder;
Brochures, FOI magazines to color, and colored pencils are distributed to deepen knowledge and encourage engagement with the world of ornithology.
We have already conducted workshops at:
Schools (including nurseries and primary schools)
Facilities for disabled people
Nursing homes (RSA)
Pediatric hospitals (such as the Giovanni XXIII Hospital in Bari)
Rehabilitation centers (such as the Carol Wojtyla in Bari)
Parishes
Summer camps
The Italian Ornithological Federation (FOI) has recognized the value of "Pet Education" by including it in its projects and outreach programs. The national announcement was made on November 27, 2024 (see announcement on the Federation's website).
Giuseppe Albergo, president of our association, has been appointed as the head of this project.
