Route description:

DESCRIPTION OF THE BOSCO LA SENTINELLA AND LAMADENZA HIKE: QUASANO

We will immerse ourselves in unspoiled nature, surrounded by rocky pastures and dense oak woods stretching as far as the eye can see. These are known as the Quarto–Resega Woods and cover 1,800 hectares of native woodland—the remnants of an ancient forest that was once much larger than it is today.

We will set out from Quasano, at the entrance to the Alta Murgia National Park, in the municipality of Toritto (BA). Originally established as a stopping place for transhumance, the village grew around the Baron’s farmhouse, first becoming a rural settlement and then, from the twentieth century onward, a well-known holiday destination.

After greeting the monumental Albero della Bugia (“Tree of Lies”), we will enter Bosco La Sentinella, walking along narrow, picturesque, shaded paths. At this time of year, the woods are brightened by the many species of mushrooms that grow here and filled with the sound of cowbells from Podolian cattle grazing in the undergrowth, among typical shrubs such as brambles, sarsaparilla, hawthorn, and blackthorn.

As we descend toward the village, we will pass by the Quasano Belvedere, a panoramic viewpoint from which, beyond the dry-stone wall, we will be able to admire the Adriatic Sea and the golden Lamadenza. The area is characterized by an ancient sheepfold and milking shelter on the slope, the centuries-old La Gloria Oak, and, at the bottom of the karst valley, a large *pescara*—an underground stone cistern for collecting rainwater. Surrounded by giant fennel, it is now an important wetland habitat for amphibians and dragonflies, which are considered ecological bioindicators.

In this setting, once shaped by ancient transhumant pastoralism, one immediately gets the feeling of retracing the footsteps of the people who lived here centuries ago. In addition to flocks of sheep, the area is home to several large wild mammals, including wild boar and its natural predators, numerous birds of prey, less common reptiles, and countless medicinal and edible wild plants typical of the Murgia pseudo-steppe.
